The story

The first Cartographer map began beneath a rain-darkened tree, with an open circle and a truth about invisible conditions.

The first map was not drawn of land. It was drawn around a tree after rain.

The listeners had argued since morning. One said the tree was made of soil because its roots disappeared into darkness. Another said water because the trunk held the storm. A third said sunlight because no leaf could keep its color without it.

The youngest listener stood apart with one palm against the wet bark. “It is made mostly from what cannot be held,” she said.

The others laughed, but the elder watched the leaves receiving the sky. “Wood,” the elder said at last, “is air taught to stand.”

She knelt and drew a charcoal circle around the tree. Before the line reached itself, she stopped.

“Why leave it open?” the youngest asked. “Because the tree is not finished.”

Years later, the first traveler arrived asking the listeners to draw a map of who he was. The elder made the same open circle on the floor.

The traveler stared into its empty center. “Where am I?” he asked.

The elder placed the charcoal in his hand. “Not inside the mark,” she said. “You are the movement that may yet cross it.”

Rain began again. One leaf moved before the others—not because the tree had decided what it was, but because the wind existed.
