The Academy field guide

Twelve ways aliveness moves.

A Current is not a personality type. It is a recurring movement of attention—what you naturally notice, move toward, and help make possible when you are most alive.

The movement is stable enough to recognize—and alive enough to keep changing.

You may recognize several Currents. One movement may serve another: Reveal may serve connection; Cultivate may serve protection; Liberate may serve care.

The Academy looks for the movement beneath the role. It does not choose the most flattering word, and it never asks you to perform a result.

The anatomy of a Current

One living pattern. Several distinct layers.

The layers stay separate so a season of friction never becomes your identity.

01

Source

The native movement of attention: Reveal, Form, Attune, or another Current.

02

Expression

How the movement travels through you—through building, teaching, art, relationship, systems, or another form.

03

Contribution

What the movement serves. Purpose matters, but it does not replace the native movement.

04

Friction

How the same gift bends under pressure, adaptation, fear, or over-responsibility.

05

Seasonal Edge

The present practice or Mantle. It may change while the deeper Current remains recognizable.

Two lenses · one human truth

The Plain Map

The Plain Map names the movement. The Old Map remembers how the Academy first learned to see it.

Twelve source movements

Open the field notes.

“Common traits” describes what often travels with a movement. It is not a checklist for claiming a label.

01

Source movement

Reveal

Making hidden structure legible

Attention follows scattered pieces until the pattern beneath them can be seen.

Reveal comes alive where confusion, contradiction, or complexity is waiting to become coherent. It does not merely collect information; it notices the relationship that changes what the information means.

Common traits
Pattern-seeingClarityDiscernmentSystems awareness
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Untangling a difficult problem
  • Naming the pattern beneath repeated events
  • Turning complexity into a useful map

Its contribution

Helps people and systems see what was already shaping the room.

When it moves crosscurrent

Wide sight can become private burden—the belief that seeing the whole means carrying every part.

Returning upcurrent

Name the connection, test it against reality, and let responsibility become shared.

Living questionWhat becomes possible once this pattern is visible—but not mine alone to carry?
02

Source movement

Connect

Bringing separated parts into relationship

Attention notices what could become possible if people, ideas, or parts of a system truly met.

Connect creates meeting places. It may introduce two people, bridge disciplines, restore conversation, or help apparently opposing truths belong to a larger whole.

Common traits
Relational intelligenceBridge-buildingBelongingSynthesis
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Making the introduction that changes a project
  • Helping two truths meet
  • Restoring honest relationship

Its contribution

Creates relationship where separation has limited possibility.

When it moves crosscurrent

Connection can bend into managing everyone’s relationship, preserving harmony at personal cost, or confusing usefulness with belonging.

Returning upcurrent

Create the meeting place without becoming responsible for everything that happens inside it.

Living questionWhich honest connection would create more room without asking me to manage the outcome?
03

Source movement

Cultivate

Creating conditions where life can grow

Attention goes to what is living, vulnerable, unfinished, or ready for steady care.

Cultivate understands that growth cannot be commanded. It tends soil, rhythm, trust, practice, and the small conditions that let a person, garden, community, or idea become more fully itself.

Common traits
CarePatienceEncouragementDevelopmental sight
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Teaching without forcing
  • Tending a garden, team, or practice
  • Protecting room for gradual growth

Its contribution

Makes growth more possible without pretending to own it.

When it moves crosscurrent

Care can become self-erasure, over-tending, or quiet resentment when everyone else’s life stays inside the circle and your own disappears.

Returning upcurrent

Tend the condition, keep yourself inside the circle, and allow life to answer in its own time.

Living questionWhat needs care—and what would care look like if my life remained included?
04

Source movement

Protect

Preserving the conditions life needs

Attention recognizes where safety, fairness, truth, or a necessary boundary must be made clear.

Protect creates the container that allows something valuable to remain honest and alive. It may look like advocacy, order, preparedness, a clear no, or the courage to stand between vulnerability and harm.

Common traits
Boundary clarityCouragePreparednessFairness
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Naming a necessary boundary
  • Creating safety and order
  • Defending truth without spectacle

Its contribution

Preserves the conditions required for life, dignity, and honest participation.

When it moves crosscurrent

Protection can harden into control, vigilance without rest, or the belief that nothing will be safe unless you personally guard every door.

Returning upcurrent

Protect the essential condition, then notice where trust, partnership, or release can return.

Living questionWhat truly needs protection here—and what am I protecting out of habit?
05

Source movement

Restore

Returning coherence and vitality

Attention notices what has been damaged, neglected, exhausted, or separated from its natural function.

Restore is drawn to repair, recovery, renewal, and the quiet work of bringing something back into right relationship. It does not recreate the past; it helps life become viable again.

Common traits
RepairRecoveryRenewalPractical compassion
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Repairing what others abandoned
  • Helping function return after disruption
  • Finding the next life inside what has been hurt

Its contribution

Returns usefulness, dignity, or aliveness where damage had begun to define the story.

When it moves crosscurrent

Restoration can become endless fixing, rescue as proof of worth, or loyalty to a repair whose life has already moved on.

Returning upcurrent

Repair what can live again, grieve what cannot, and let enough be a real completion.

Living questionIs this asking to be restored, released, or loved without being repaired?
06

Source movement

Translate

Carrying meaning across a threshold

Attention moves between languages, worlds, disciplines, or ways of knowing until meaning can cross intact.

Translate makes the inaccessible human. It may turn technology into ordinary language, feeling into words, vision into a plan, or one person’s world into something another can genuinely understand.

Common traits
Meaning-makingAccessibilitySynthesisPerspective-shifting
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Explaining complexity without flattening it
  • Giving language to what was felt but unspoken
  • Helping different worlds understand each other

Its contribution

Lets meaning travel without requiring everyone to begin from the same place.

When it moves crosscurrent

Translation can become invisibility—always carrying other people’s meaning while your own voice goes unheard—or simplification that loses what mattered.

Returning upcurrent

Preserve the living meaning, include your own voice, and allow some things to remain complex.

Living questionWhat meaning am I carrying across—and what must remain intact as it travels?
07

Source movement

Liberate

Loosening what no longer needs to bind

Attention finds inherited rules, false obligations, and constraining patterns that have been mistaken for reality.

Liberate opens space. It helps a person or system recognize where adaptation became confinement and where a truer choice is now possible. Its clean movement is freedom with responsibility.

Common traits
FreedomTruth-tellingReframingPermission
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Questioning an inherited rule
  • Helping someone reclaim authorship
  • Opening a door where resignation had settled

Its contribution

Returns choice where habit, fear, or imposed identity had made life feel inevitable.

When it moves crosscurrent

Liberation can become rebellion as identity, rupture before readiness, or freedom that refuses the responsibilities of relationship.

Returning upcurrent

Release what is false at the pace reality can hold, and stay in relationship with what the freedom makes possible.

Living questionWhat is ready to loosen—and what responsibility belongs to the freedom that follows?
08

Source movement

Form

Giving possibility a durable shape

Attention stays with an idea until it can be seen, heard, held, practiced, or used in ordinary life.

Form is the movement of making. It builds the bridge from imagination to reality through craft, structure, language, design, sound, ritual, code, or any other honest container.

Common traits
CreativityCraftConstructionEmbodiment
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Making the first real version
  • Designing a container for an idea
  • Turning imagination into something others can meet

Its contribution

Allows a living possibility to enter the world and be answered by reality.

When it moves crosscurrent

Making can become performance, perfectionism, or output as proof of worth. Faithful production may continue long after meaning has gone flat.

Returning upcurrent

Make the smallest honest form, let reality respond, and remember that your worth did not enter the object.

Living questionWhat wants a form now—before it wants a verdict or a perfect plan?
09

Source movement

Explore

Opening a path through the unknown

Attention moves toward unfamiliar territory, a living question, or a possibility that can only be understood through contact.

Explore learns by entering. It tests, wanders, experiments, and follows curiosity until an unknown becomes a path someone can actually walk.

Common traits
CuriosityExperimentationAdaptabilityDiscovery
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Learning how something works by touching it
  • Taking a reversible first step
  • Finding possibility beyond the existing map

Its contribution

Opens usable paths through territory that certainty could not cross.

When it moves crosscurrent

Exploration can become novelty without return, escape disguised as possibility, or resistance when a living question is contained too soon.

Returning upcurrent

Choose a reversible contact with the unknown, then return with evidence instead of only momentum.

Living questionWhich unknown is asking for contact rather than certainty?
10

Source movement

Attune

Sensing what the moment is actually saying

Attention listens beneath the obvious for timing, atmosphere, resonance, subtle change, and clean embodied knowing.

Attune notices before it explains. It may hear a change in tone, feel when a room has shifted, recognize symbolic meaning, or sense which possibility carries quiet aliveness.

Common traits
PresenceSensitivityTimingSymbolic imagination
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Hearing what has not yet been said
  • Noticing the room change
  • Finding the quiet signal beneath noise

Its contribution

Brings choices back into contact with the living reality of the moment.

When it moves crosscurrent

Sensitivity can become overwhelm, projection, borrowed certainty, or treating a symbol as an instruction that outranks concrete evidence.

Returning upcurrent

Hold the signal gently, ground it in the body and observable reality, and let symbols remain symbols.

Living questionWhat do I notice—and what concrete evidence would help me hold it honestly?
11

Source movement

Challenge

Meeting the assumption that blocks movement

Attention goes to the unquestioned rule, contradiction, avoidance, or comfortable story that keeps truth from moving.

Challenge creates productive friction. Through inquiry, courage, humor, dissent, or direct speech, it interrupts what everyone has learned not to notice.

Common traits
Courageous inquiryCandorCatalysisPattern interruption
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Asking the question the room avoids
  • Testing an inherited assumption
  • Using honest friction to reopen possibility

Its contribution

Breaks the spell of false inevitability and returns choice to the room.

When it moves crosscurrent

Challenge can become opposition for its own sake, intensity as proof of truth, or pressure that closes the very person or system it hoped to wake.

Returning upcurrent

Serve the truth rather than the fight. Choose timing, relationship, and the smallest friction that can restore movement.

Living questionWhat needs to be challenged—and what form of truth could still be heard?
12

Source movement

Steward

Holding the long view with care

Attention stays with continuity, consequence, resources, standards, and what must remain trustworthy over time.

Steward tends the whole across seasons. It protects future possibility through governance, maintenance, memory, responsibility, and decisions that honor more than the immediate moment.

Common traits
Long-view thinkingIntegrityResponsibilityContinuity
Read the deeper field note

Often recognized in

  • Designing what can be trusted later
  • Holding standards without performance
  • Caring for resources, memory, and consequence

Its contribution

Keeps what matters coherent enough to outlive the current moment.

When it moves crosscurrent

Stewardship can become private burden, control disguised as care, or carrying a future that was meant to have many hands.

Returning upcurrent

Make responsibility visible, distribute ownership, and practice release as part of trustworthy care.

Living questionWhat is mine to steward—and what must be shared, entrusted, or released?

The Naming Chamber

A name waits for enough life beneath it.

A Current Name is earned through evidence and consent.

A name is not withheld as a prize. The twelve English names are Source movements. A traveler’s fuller Current also includes the way that movement appears across real situations, what it serves, and where its gift bends under pressure.

The Academy does not mint a personal name from three answers. It waits for concrete aliveness, concrete friction, recurrence across contexts, and language that belongs to the traveler. A stable Source-and-Expression stem may eventually receive an Aevra rendering; seasonal Edge and Mantle remain separate. Symbolic naming is optional, correctable, and private until the traveler chooses otherwise.

The language is visible now. Your name is earned later.

Recognition begins with evidence

Which movement becomes visible when you stop trying to be impressive?

The Signal offers one precisely partial reflection. My Constellation lets the evidence deepen over time. Neither page asks you to become a type.
