Wood Is Air Taught to Stand

The story of the First Listening

The story

The first Cartographer map began beneath a rain-soaked tree, with an open circle and a truth about invisible conditions.

The first map was not drawn of land. It was drawn around a tree after rain.

One Listener said the tree was made of soil. Another said water. A third named sunlight. The youngest stood with one hand against the wet trunk and said, “It is made mostly from what cannot be held.”

The elder watched the leaves receive the sky. “Wood,” she said, “is air taught to stand.”

She drew a circle around the tree, then stopped before the line closed.

“Why leave it open?” the youngest asked.

“Because the tree is not finished.”

Years later, when the first traveler asked the Cartographers to draw a map of who he was, the elder drew the same open circle.

The traveler looked at the empty center. “Where am I?”

She placed the charcoal in his hand. “Not inside the mark,” she said. “You are the movement that may yet cross it.”
