Academy poster 001 · Discernment

The Art of Discernment

See More Clearly. Live More Wisely.

Discernment begins with noticing what is happening and becoming curious about the meaning we give it. This illustrated guide offers five layers of practice, from checking first impressions to bringing several perspectives into an everyday decision.

These five levels are practices you can revisit whenever they are useful. Start wherever the guide meets your current question; there is no rank to earn.

Five colored stone steps rise beside a mountain lake: Foundation, Mindful Pause, Critical Awareness, Deep Discernment, and Integrated Wisdom. A lantern, a golden dog, and Gary the hermit crab wizard accompany the path. The poster's complete text follows below.

The poster, in words

A closer look at discernment

Discernment is the ability to recognize what is true, helpful, and relevant — and to distinguish it from what is false, unhelpful, or merely noise. It isn't cynicism or blind belief. It's a balanced, curious, and courageous way of engaging with life.

Discernment isn't about thinking more. It's about seeing more clearly.

It's the pause between stimulus and story, where wisdom can choose.

Level 1 · Beginner

Foundation

  • Notices what is real and observable
  • Begins to question first impressions
  • Develops healthy skepticism and open-mindedness
  • Practices simple checks: Is it true? Is it helpful?

Start Here. It Matters.

Level 2 · Beginner–Intermediate

Mindful Pause

  • Creates space between stimulus and response
  • Becomes aware of inner reactions
  • Asks, “What else might be true?”
  • Begins to question automatic patterns

Pause Creates Possibility.

Level 3 · Intermediate

Critical Awareness

  • Evaluates sources and evidence
  • Distinguishes fact, opinion, and emotion
  • Notices personal triggers and projections
  • Slows down before reacting

Look Deeper.

Level 4 · Intermediate–Advanced

Deep Discernment

  • Notices hidden assumptions
  • Recognizes manipulation and bias
  • Considers multiple perspectives
  • Stays curious rather than certain

Bigger Perspective. Deeper Clarity.

Level 5 · Advanced

Integrated Wisdom

  • Sees patterns across contexts
  • Holds complexity with ease
  • Balances logic, intuition, and values
  • Chooses with clarity and peaceful confidence

Wisdom in Action

Carry it into an ordinary moment

The discernment practice

  1. Notice

    What is happening?

  2. Inquire

What do I know? What am I assuming?

  3. Explore

    What else might be true?

  4. Consider

What aligns with wisdom and values?

  5. Choose

What is the most skillful next step?

Discernment turns information into wisdom and experience into a richer life.
