erty dispute. * * * Night reached the meadow. The masks kept the light they had gathered: warmth in wooden grain, sunset on clay, one star at a time in the thin metal. Across the room, the crack in the wall widened. Beyond it waited no hallway. A stair descended beneath the table. Water moved below. The sound had been present since Else called the masks learned. Now it became impossible not to hear. Not a fountain. Not rain. A current traveling under stone. The brass key rang once in the present pocket. Else did not remove it. At the top of the stair, a narrow arch carried no name. He lifted the lantern and looked back at the pale mask. For one breath, he expected it to turn. It did not. Rest was not disappearance. The mask might return, and he might wear it before noticing. The phone remained quiet after the message. Tomorrow still required a conversation. Gary climbed onto Wilder’s back carrying the category sheet, five tags, two pieces of charcoal, the cloudy Founder glass, the new fragment, and the confident assumption that all underground waterways required an intake desk. Wilder stopped on the first wet stair. The heavy scraping came again from below, followed by a rush of water. Gary caught the back of his collar. “Wait.” Else lowered the lantern until its light reached the next step. Something down there was getting louder.
